Hope Video

Job 11:18  “You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and take your rest in safety.”

We've all heard that inspirational aphorism that goes, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade."

Hank Carter took a friend's lemons and turned them into wheelchairs, computers, exercise equipment, buses and  a greenhouse for thousands of patients at Coler-Goldwater Memorial Hospital on Roosevelt Island.

Some patients use the computers to complete college courses.  Others have the puff-and-sip devices that allow patients who have no mobility to work them with their breath.

There was a patient whose vocal cords were damaged and she used a DynaVox machine provided by Wheelchair Charities to speak.

Coler-Goldwater Specialty Hospital and Nursing provides quality medical, recuperative, rehabilitative and long-term specialty service to patients. Hank Carter had a friend that was being treated at the hospital after being paralyzed from the waist down from a stray bullet. Carter's friend needed a wheelchair but the hospital was limited on equipment. Carter then decided that he would raise the money to not only help his friend but help other patients at the hospital.

“The bullet hit Tjader’s body, but it did not hit his soul; God brought us together,” Hank Carter noted, adding:  “I started out as a bank teller and ended up senior vice president. The more you do good, the more God gives you.”
